South African Wine Tour - Kumusha

Wed, May 29, 24
Kumusha translates to ‘your home’, ‘your roots’ or ‘your origin’ in the Zimbabwean language. World Renowned Sommelier, Tinashe Nyamudoka, believes the best wines are representative of their region. Through a collaborative process with respect to the vine, the winemaker, and the consumer. Tinashe is building a brand of wines that represent and honor their roots. Minimal intervention winemaking and natural fermentation is aimed at letting the wine be free to do the talking of its origin. These are wines that Tinashe would not only like to drink himself, but wines that, from his experience as a sommelier, are representative of what is leading the way for the style of South African wines.

After a formidable career in the South African hospitality industry, working at some of Africa’s finest hotels and restaurants, respected sommelier Tinashe Nyamudoka was ready for a change. He relocated to Johannesburg and is now set to take over the world with his own wine brand, Kumusha Wines. “For Black Africans, wine is not historically part of our culture,” he says. “I wanted to create a wine to help change that.” Tinashe started Kumusha in 2017 after reaching out to Attie Louw, his friend and the winemaker at Opstal. He started with 1200 cases of a Chenin-Semillon blend that sold out in under 3 months. Tinashe cites some of the talented young producers in Swaartland who have moved in the direction of making more natural, lower alcohol, lower intervention wines as his inspiration.
We have been big fans of Kumusha at Provisions for a while and Toni managed to get her hands on four new and very limited wines from the "Wild Mutupo" line.

Our Beverage Director, Toni DeLuca, was invited on a trip to South Africa to explore the wine producers of Baobab Wine Imports with owner Giles Thomas. Baobab is a company that focuses on family owned and operated vineyards with a commitment to tell the true story of the South African wine industry - the history, terroir, culture, and people that are driving the future of winemaking in South Africa. They represent small estates, small production, and all of which are working sustainably at a minimum while most properties are practicing organic and/or biodynamic and crafting wines with a thoughtful and often minimal intervention approach.
This unique opportunity allowed Toni to explore authentic and soulful wines from the most iconic wine growing regions in South Africa. Throughout the next months, and as new wine arrives into the shops, we will highlight the producers that Toni discovered and fell in love with on her trip. If you have any questions about these wines or her experience, please feel free to send Toni a message directly at Toni@provisionswine.com.
