Olifantsberg: Where the soul of the mountain meets a focused quest for quality...

This scenic winery, in the heart of the Breede River Valley, is situated at 500m on the slopes of the Brandwacht Mountain Range. The vineyards endure big diurnal temperature swings and strong winds along with rocky, marginal soils. This rugged terrain forces the vines to work hard, dig their roots deep into the ground, and thus offers a spectacular minerality and complexity to the wines.

The wines are crafted by a dynamic husband and wife team: Ferdi and Elizma Vesser. Their vision is to produce authentic wines with a true sense of place and which reflects the unique location of their vineyards. They are focused on sustainable farming and winemaking practices resulting in limited intervention in both the vineyard and cellar. They are committed to better understanding the concept of "terroir" which in turn adds to the singularity of their wines. Tasting their wines evokes an emotional connection to their land and offers a true sense place.

We are thrilled to have their Grenache Blanc and Grenache Noir, hand picked by our Beverage Director, and showcase a stunning beauty that is truly special.

Grenache Noir

This is an aromatic wine with a lot of red berried notes, especially strawberry with some cherry and raspberry. There is a beautiful freshness on the palate tha topens to blood orange and dried herbs with a soft hint of savory spice and pepper.

Grenache Blanc

Unlike any other Grenache Blanc and very different from it's Spanish kin with herbal aromas, a touch of flinty smoke, this is a poised wine that is well put together with flavors of citrus and a texture that is refreshing while being structured and a bit waxy (think bees wax).

Our Beverage Director, Toni DeLuca, was invited on a trip to South Africa to explore the wine producers of Baobab Wine Imports with owner Giles Thomas. Baobab is a company that focuses on family owned and operated vineyards with a commitment to tell the true story of the South African wine industry - the history, terroir, culture, and people that are driving the future of winemaking in South Africa. They represent small estates, small production, and all of which are working sustainably at a minimum while most properties are practicing organic and/or biodynamic and crafting wines with a thoughtful and often minimal intervention approach.

This unique opportunity allowed Toni to explore authentic and soulful wines from the most iconic wine growing regions in South Africa. Throughout the next months, and as new wine arrives into the shops, we will highlight the producers that Toni discovered and fell in love with on her trip.
