South African Wine Tour - Benguela Cove

Wed, Apr 10, 24
Benguela Cove is situated on a salt water lagoon directly over looking the Ocean where the Indian and Atlantic merge.  This area is known for a cold antarctic current that brings frigid water and cool breezes to the coast line.  This cool air, low altitude, and proximity to the ocean gives a cool and consistent climate for grape growing and allows for a wide range of varieties to thrive. Woman owned, this exquisite property in the Western Cape boasts many red and white grapes that are mostly French in origin. What really struck Toni's heart were their two magical sparkling wines...

In South Africa, the terminology for traditional method sparkling wine (aka "Champagne Method) is referred to as "Methode Cap Classique" (MCC for short) and at Benguela Cove there are two MCC wines produced with the proprietary name Cuvee 58. The number 58 is a play on the number of cuts for a diamond to give it's best shine. The name really does the wine justice as these two delicious sparklers shine bright and over deliver in quality. They truly stand up to Champagne in quality but are unique as the grape variety highlighted for both wines is Sauvignon Blanc. A grape atypical for traditional method sparkling wine as it is aromatic and bold in personality. Benguela Cove managed to take a grape known for being extravagant and gave it a refined make-over!

Our Beverage Director, Toni DeLuca, was invited on a trip to South Africa to explore the wine producers of Baobab Wine Imports with owner Giles Thomas. Baobab is a company that focuses on family owned and operated vineyards with a commitment to tell the true story of the South African wine industry - the history, terroir, culture, and people that are driving the future of winemaking in South Africa. They represent small estates, small production, and all of which are working sustainably at a minimum while most properties are practicing organic and/or biodynamic and crafting wines with a thoughtful and often minimal intervention approach.
This unique opportunity allowed Toni to explore authentic and soulful wines from the most iconic wine growing regions in South Africa. Throughout the next months, and as new wine arrives into the shops, we will highlight the producers that Toni discovered and fell in love with on her trip. If you have any questions about these wines or her experience, please feel free to send Toni a message directly at Toni@provisionswine.com.
